Amber Lawrence
A vocalist with a predilection for sweetness -- a characteristic that ties together her earlier, rootsier material and her polished latter-day country-pop -- Amber Lawrence became an artist in her native Australia a bit on the late side. She released The Mile, her 2007 debut album, when she was just shy of 30, earning attention from Australia's country music association the Golden Guitar Awards, which nominated her for New Talent and Female Artist of the Year. She eventually won the latter category in 2015 after her fourth album, Superheroes, became a hit. From there, she built her audience, culminating in her biggest chart hit, Spark, in 2019.
A native of Mascot, a suburb of Sydney, Lawrence joined Qantas as a chartered accountant after graduating from the University of New South Wales. After spending six years there, she left the company to pursue a musical career.
I've Got the Blues, Lawrence's debut EP, arrived in 2006, with The Mile following the next year. The Mile earned attention from both the Golden Guitar and the Australian Independent Record Labels Association, who nominated it for Independent Country Album of the Year. When It All Comes Down appeared in 2009, helping Lawrence secure the People's Choice Award for Female Artist of the Year from the Golden Guitar. Her third album, appropriately titled 3, was released in 2011. Its 2014 successor, Superheroes was instrumental in Lawrence winning Female Artist of the Year at the Golden Guitar Awards.
A live album, Hometown Girl, arrived in 2015, with the children's record The Kids Gone Country arriving the next year. Her proper sequel to Superheroes, Happy Ever After, also arrived in 2016. Lawrence recorded a duet album with Travis Collins called Our Backyard in 2017, the same year that she released the seasonal set Aussie Aussie Christmas. During 2017, she also headed to New York upon the invitation of the American Australian Association to perform "100 Year Handshake" in front of a crowd that included Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Donald Trump. Over the next year, the song became an internet hit, setting up the release of her next studio album, Spark, in 2019.
