Alex Hitchcock
Alex Hitchcock is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. As an undergraduate he served as director of the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra. He worked with the Tom Smith Septet, Resolution 88, and Joe Hill's North Ark, then formed a namesake quintet and released Live at the London & Cambridge Jazz Festivals in 2018, followed by All Good Things in 2019. Later that year, he formed Aub with bassist/composer Tom Barford and drummer James Maddren. Their eponymous debut appeared in 2020. On 2021's Dream Band, he led three different ensembles simply to hear their contrasts. 2022's acclaimed Same Moon in the Same World, in collaboration with guitarist Ant Law, was recorded with a cast of international jazz luminaries. 2023's Dream Band: Live in London was recorded over three nights at London's Vortex Club with three handpicked bands, performing music Hitchcock composed for each ensemble.
Hitchcock was born and raised in London. His first instrument was the violin at age four; at nine, he gave it up to learn alto saxophone. He developed a close affinity for the work of legend Coleman Hawkins and modern jazzman Joshua Redman; he again switched instruments, exchanging the alto for a tenor sax.
Hitchcock attended Cambridge University where he studied English and haunted London's vibrant jazz scene. He went on to direct the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra. They toured Istanbul and collaborated with Gareth Lockrane. Back in London, he enrolled in a post-graduate course at the Royal Academy of Music. He formed a namesake quintet to perform his final recital. An EP titled Live at the London & Cambridge Jazz Festivals appeared in 2018. Impressed, Spain's Fresh Sound, New Talent label signed the group. The following year, the Alex Hitchcock quintet recorded and released their label debut, All Good Things. That year Hitchcock also appeared with the Patchwork Jazz Orchestra on the album The Adventures of Mr. Pottercakes.
Later that year, Hitchcock and saxophonist/composer Tom Barford teamed up with drummer James Maddren to form Aub (pronounced Orb), and in 2020 issued an eponymous album for Edition Records. Hitchcock also contributed to Joe Downward's Seven Japanese Tales and Post Louis' Descender.
The following year, Hitchcock, guitarist Ant Law, and French drummer Marc Michel appeared on double bassist Matt Ridley's quartet for The Antidote. Recorded in 2019, it included five Ridley originals plus a side-long, five-part suite. Also in 2021, Hitchcock released his second Fresh Sound New Talent long-player. Titled Dream Band, it was recorded over three days in May, and showcased the saxophonist's writing and arranging for three different ensembles assembled just for the recording.
During the pandemic and into 2021, Hitchcock and Law enlisted a cast of international jazz luminaries including bassists Linda May Han Oh and Ben Williams, vibraphonist Joel Ross, bass clarinetist Tim Garland, pianist Shai Maestro, and four alternating drummers -- Jeff Ballard, Eric Harland, Kendrick Scott, and Sun-Mi Hong -- to record compositions by the two leaders virtually. Titled The Same Moon in the Same World, and released by the Outside In Music label, it drew critical acclaim across the globe for its focus and fierce determination not to be silenced during the quarantine.
Over three nights in August 2022, Hitchcock assembled three different sextets to perform his compositions over three nights at the city's Vortex Club. He played in each. Among the participants were regular collaborators Law, Michel. and Maddren alongside contributions from pianist Kit Downes, trumpeter Alexandra Ridout, vocalist Liselotte Östblom, and more. The triple-length Dream Band: Live in London drawn from these evenings, was released in November 2023.
