In 2006, Georgia Anne Muldrow was welcomed into the Stones Throw family along with her promising debut album, Olesi: Fragments of an Earth. The collaboration lasted only a few months, but the Californian producer seems to have clung onto that sound. Fifteen years and twenty long-form releases later, she has brought out VWETO III. Across seventeen tracks steeped in heavy synths, she shows her love (a love which she shares with Madlib) for abstract ideas and raw samples. The excellent opening piece Old Jack Swing sets the tone. This track is a mixture of distorted bass, organic beats, and layered keyboards. Rapper Ayun Bassa is brought in to supply his blend of beats and spiritual jazz on Synthmania Rock and Ayun Vegas. Muldrow moves on to tracks with off-beat, martial drums like Action Groove, Ghostride or the more classic Throwback Baps. She even offers up some soul / jazz on Slow Drag, and space funk on the superb Unforgettable. Her two watchwords are groove and depth. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
