Thomas Oliemans
The career of baritone Thomas Oliemans has an international reach as an opera singer, song recitalist, and singer of concert music, and he has worked with many of the top conductors of both opera and choral music. He has an unusually large repertoire stretching from Bach to music of the present day.
Oliemans was born in Amsterdam in 1977. He attended the Amsterdam Conservatory, where his main instructor was Margreet Honig. Oliemans went on for further studies with Robert Holl, Dieter Müller, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, among others. He made his debut in 2002 with the Nationale Reisopera of The Netherlands in Hans Werner Henze's Pollicino, and he was soon invited to take several more roles with the company, including in Handel's Arianna in Creta and Britten's Peter Grimes. Other operatic appearances followed around the Netherlands, including at the NPS opera matinee series at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, in Verdi's La Traviata with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, and on a live television broadcast at Amsterdam's Grachtenfestival. He made his recording debut with Schubert's Winterreise, D. 911, released on the Fineline label.
In the 2010s, Oliemans built an international career both live -- in opera, concert music, and song -- and on recordings. He has recorded for MDG, Challenge Classics, and Channel Classics, among other labels. In addition to regular appearances at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, Oliemans has appeared twice at Covent Garden in London, twice at the Teatro Real Madrid, and at the English National Opera in a pair of Mozart works. He is a regular guest at festivals and has appeared with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, among many other groups. Oliemans' concert repertoire is substantial, extending from the Bach Passions to Richard Danielpour's Elegie. In song recitals, his accompanists include such prestigious figures as Malcolm Martineau, Roger Vignoles, and Graham Johnson. In 2021, Oliemans continued to demonstrate his versatility with Formidable!, an album of French chansons on Channel Classics.
