Geoffroy Jourdain
Conductor Geoffroy Jourdain is best known as the creator and director of the innovative small vocal ensembles Les Cris de Paris. He has also served as guest director of various other choral groups, both in France and beyond.
Jourdain was born in France in 1972. He studied musicology at the Sorbonne, also taking conducting lessons from Pierre Cao and Patrick Marco. From the start, he was oriented toward the creation of ensembles that would enable him to realize a creative vision. Jourdain formed the Baroque ensemble Vivete Felici in 1993. In 1998, he established a second group, Les Cris de Paris (the name means "The Street Cries of Paris"), which also performed Baroque music, but added a strong emphasis on the contemporary and the commissioning of new works. He remains that ensemble's director. Whatever music Les Cris de Paris performs, the group approaches it as an artistic totality: Jourdain works as needed with designers, stage directors, actors, and choreographers. These efforts drew attention to the young conductor from more traditional musical outlets. A winner of a Fondation de France award in 2000, he co-directed the Choir of the Orchestre de Paris with Didier Bouture and the Youth Choir of Paris with Laurence Equilbey two years later. Jourdain served as guest conductor of Capella Amsterdam in 2013. He has also participated in the premieres of contemporary operas, including the opera Cachafaz by Oscar Strasnoy, and he has conducted the operas Orphée et Eurydice and Iphigénie en Tauride of Gluck, as well as Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, at the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Paris. With Les Cris de Paris, Jourdain has been a fixture of the contemporary Paris scene and has made appearances beyond France, including with the Cologne Philharmonic in Germany and at the Festival Cervatino in Guanajuato, Mexico. Jourdain is also the director of La Pop, a barge moored in Paris where musical theater is performed.
Signed to the Alpha label in 2010, and also recording for the related Aparte label, Jourdain and Les Cris de Paris have recorded the newly reconstructed oratorio Les Paradis Perdu (1878) by Théodore Dubois, as well as the little-known Missa Sacra of Robert Schumann. In 2018, Jourdain and Les Cris de Paris moved to the Harmonia Mundi label; there, they released the album Passions: Venezia 1600-1750 in 2019.
