Bobby Jones

A minor figure best-known for his association with Charles Mingus in the early '70s, Bobby Jones was a talented tenor saxophonist with a versatile style. He struggled in the musical minor leagues for a long time, playing with the Glenn Miller ghost band (1959), a few months with Woody Herman (1963), and for a short while, clarinet with Jack Teagarden. Jones played well with Mingus (1970-1972) and recorded albums as a leader for Cobblestone (1972) and Enja (1974), doubling on tenor and clarinet for the latter. He settled in Munich, but his emphysema forced him to stop playing and concentrate on arranging before cutting short his life.
