Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs come together for a powerful collaboration.

Back in the day, stars would sometimes come together to make a couple of albums. In 1987, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris tried their hands at it, and repeated the venture twelve years later… Now, following in their illustrious footsteps, is an album that combines three distinctly individual voices and styles, in the forms of Neko Case, k.d lang and Laura Veirs. This mouth-watering line-up appears on the modestly titled album case/lang/veirs, on ANTI. From what the rumour mill tells us, these three women weren’t actually very close in « real life » before the album. In fact, rumour has it that k.d lang set the whole thing in motion by sending an email to her two future collaborators along the lines of : « I think we should make an album together. » A heartbeat later, the trio chose Portland as their base for writing and recording, and began. Produced by Tucker Martine (who moonlights as Laura Veirs’ husband), the fourteen songs on the record blend hand-crafted americana with folk and 60s vintage pop. The harmonies are elegantly painted in a variety of shades, both in terms of richness and tone. On the whole, the individual strengths of each artist are allowed to shine through, thanks to the class of the ensemble. Happy to play the part of band member, yet willing to embrace the limelight when called upon, each singer brings their own special flavour : k.d lang is an authentic country crooner with a silky voice, Laura Veirs plays her own version of luxury folk, and Neko Case is the sexy, supercharged rock’n’roll queen. As you listen to the album, case/lang/veirs demonstrates its artistic power, as well as the quality of its writing and performance. It’s hard not to love it.
