The young Oxford quartet has dropped its highly anticipated debut album, ‘Zaba’…

‘Zaba’ is a thoughtfully put-together first album from Glass Animals. We’ll classify it as dreamlike indie electro, with futuristic trip hop added in for good measure. There are very perceptible hip-hop/R&B influences too: the intro to ‘Hazey’ reminds us a little of ‘Teach Me How To Dougie’, or even Snoop Dogg’s ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’… We’d recommend that you check out the serene jungle rhythms in ‘Pools’ and ‘Walla Walla’, whilst the lyrics to ‘Gooey’ (‘Fresh out of an icky gooey womb/ A woozy womb/ Dope so good, a silky smooth perfume’) will soon be etched in your memory. Glass Animals were signed to Paul Epworth’s independent label Wolf Tone in 2013 (though he set up the label recently, Epworth has a wealth of experience working with pop superstars from Adele to Florence and the Machine). And even if you might think that Glass Animals will be another version of Morcheeba, The XX,The Weeknd, or Animal Collective, we guarantee that ‘Zaba’’s hybrid style is worth the musical detour.
