Metallica, the Path to Glory

by Smaël Bouaici

Having sold 125 million albums across the globe, including some 30 million copies of their “Black Album”, Metallica is among the unlikeliest of pop sensations to come out of the last half-century. So how did a heavy metal band with such a convoluted song structure end up on par with music from the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson? By following their instincts and sheer determination. Let’s return to the roots of the most famous heavy metal band in history.

It was enough to draw the attention of star producers from the American music industry, including Bob Rock, who had just finished producing Mötley Crüe’s album for Elektra. Metallica liked the album’s “heaviness” and began to compose a new album in the summer of 1990, opening with the creepy nursery-rhyme Enter Sandman. With twelve tracks and many timeless hits, (The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, Sad but True, Nothing Else Matters, etc.), Metallica built a bridge between metal and radio, normalising a whole genre of music that suddenly became palatable and, most importantly, mainstream. The album went to number 1 in 10 countries after its release on August 12, 1991, and remained there for four weeks in the United States. With over 16 million copies sold, the album became a symbol of pop culture in the early ‘90s. “Everybody owned that album”, explained Bob Rock in an interview on the Reverb website. “Dentists loved the Black album! There was a musical transition when the album came out, and it changed radio because that heavy sound was now on the radio. So culturally, it had an impact, and I don’t think I’ve made a record that had done that before”.

However, the producer insisted that there was never any business strategy to try and catch a bigger audience. “None of this stuff is conscious, there was no concept, except we agreed on the sonics. I just helped them make the album they wanted to make, that’s all I did”. Ulrich believed this paradigm shift was a natural step in the band’s evolution, even if he didn’t hide the fact that they intended to produce an album that was on the same level as the first Led Zeppelin album or AC/DC’s Back in Black. “I’m not an idiot. I know when I put the album on that it is an album that can reach a lot of people,” he said. “But that is just the way the album turned out. We were just bored with what we were doing. Things had become so complex that the only direction for us to go was to simplify, which I wish we had done a long time ago. I think we told ourselves (before) that what we were doing was a lot harder…playing all these progressive, sideways things. But I think we were running away from the truth. Now I think it is a lot harder to sit down and write a three-minute, one-riff rock song than hiding behind a 10-minute version of the same thing.”

With Bob Rock still at their side, Metallica and its new global reputation went on to attempt shorter songs such as Until It Sleeps (4 min 30), the single from their album Load, released a year before its follow-up album Reload, in 1996 and 1997 respectively. Despite their career taking off, the band is rather unique for its two distinct fanbases as it was heavily criticised by original fans who weren’t keen on the new influx of Metallica enthusiasts. The following albums they released (St Anger in 2003, Death Magnetic in 2008, Hardwired…to Self-Destruct in 2016) never quite surpassed the standard of the Black album and their tours mainly serve to replay the classics, but their fanbase continues to grow despite all these years. “Onstage, we often ask the audience who’s come for the first time, and we’re amazed to see so many people each time”, said James Hetfield. “We haven’t made compromises to be accepted by the mainstream. I think we’ve been so honest and open about what we want and what we don’t want. (…) We have created our own mainstream, that's what I believe”.
