About Playlist

Gregory Porter is an American singer songwriter and actor born in Los Angeles. From a young age, he sang in his local gospel choir, already establishing himself as a powerful vocalist. Initially aspiring to a career in American Football, his plans were disrupted when a shoulder injury struck the athletically promising Porter. As a result, music became his main interest and focus. His meeting with Kamau Kenyatta would prove to be pivotal in his career. The saxophonist would become his mentor and would eventually present him to Hubert Laws, an established flautist. This relationship would again prove fruitful, as Laws would record him on a track: Smile, from his album Hubert Laws Remembers The Unforgettable Nat "King" Cole, released in 1998. It is during this recording that singer Eloise Laws, the flautist's sister, fascinated by Porter’s art and manner, sees in him an ideal candidate for a lead role of an upcoming musical, detailing the history of blues music. This Broadway musical, It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues would end up being performed 284 times and nominated for four Tony Awards including for best musical. Photo © Jean-Baptiste Millot
