The magic sticks of Makaya McCraven have been shaking up the jazz world for the past few years. The son of drummer Stephen McCraven and Hungarian singer Agnes Zsigmondi has been keeping the genre from going in circles with his albums of sound collage and live improvisation. After several releases published mainly on International Anthem, a bubbling Chicago label, Makaya signs his name, for the first time, on the cover of a Blue Note record, Deciphering the Message, rightly celebrating the heritage of the mythical label created in 1939.
