A new EP by Hologram Lo’, beatmaker on the rise

It’s not much of a step from Low to Hologram Lo’, not much at all. But it’s a giant leap from Made in France to his brilliant new EP Jeep, appearing on his label, Don Dada Records. Starting out as the DJ from 1995 (the band, not the year), Louis Courtine rapidly developed a style all his own. Brought up on the golden age of hip hop and big names (Pete Rock and DJ Premier), he’s keen to use instrumentals and sung verses (by the Englishman Murkage Dave) in an eclectic and pluralist groove. Like many tinkerers of his generation, Lo’s sounds are not exclusively attributable to hip-hop, and owe much to electro, jazz, house, trap, soul, among others. It’s difficult not to include one of his teachers in the mix, the great DJ Mehdi, who was at the forefront of style crossover. But Jeep has its own signature. It’s a relaxed world, supple of rhythm and pretty addictive.
