A companion piece to their 2019 album, Walk the Sky, this seven-track EP from American metal outfit Alter Bridge combines new material with live renditions of original album tracks. Handpicked by the band, the live versions give another insight into the originals, while the track "Last Rites," specially recorded for the release, hints at the direction of new material. © Rich Wilson /TiVo

The 12th studio long-player from the shape-shifting and musically adept American, German, and Swedish hard rock band, The Shadow Theory delivers a master class in fusing together classical, gothic/doom metal, progressive rock, world music, and symphonic metal. Helmed by lauded power metal producer Sascha Paeth and mastered by Jacob Hansen, the follow-up to 2015's critically acclaimed Haven features a guest spot from Once Human's Lauren Hart, and includes the dystopian single "Phantom Divine" (Shadow Empire)." © James Christopher Monger /TiVo

Those for whom Nu Metal was once "nu" will need to process the fact that its saturated sounds are now over 25 years old. Since then, a new generation has emerged, raised on the works of Korn, Deftones, Linkin Park or the more virulent Slipknot. Tetrarch are the perfect example of a group that grew up on the music of the 1990s and 2000s. They distilled all of their influences into a kind of ‘Nu’ Nu Metal, which preserves the sound of the original baggy-trousered metallers who popularised drop tunings and seven-strings. After an EP (2013) and a first self-produced album (2017), the Atlanta-born group has now settled in Los Angeles, the city of opportunity, and this is their first album released with a serious label. Unstable is halfway between Nu-Metal (from which it draws its sense of groove and some of its poppier choruses) and Metalcore (from which it borrows its power and a certain kind of thrash-inspired violence). A sign of the times, Tetrarch have brought in a mainstream tone that makes their work more widely accessible. It is as if they had suddenly cracked the code of attracting a younger audience that wants both heady melodies and saturated sounds. It's hard not to be reminded of Linkin Park by I'm Not Right, of Slipknot by Negative Noise and Unstable, or of Korn by You Never Listen and Stitch Me Up. This is a perfect document of an era, but also a timely update. Could we call this contemporary metal? More or less... But the four-piece has added a little something of their own, mainly thanks to the guitar playing of soloist Diamond Rowe. Whereas Nu-Metal was mostly content with bass-heavy rhythms overlaid with a little noise or Whammy pedal distortion (an effect favoured by Korn and made famous by Rage Against the Machine's talented Tom Morello), this young woman shreds and taps out scalar patterns in a style inherited from old-timers like her idols Metallica. More than just another guitarist, Rowe became the group's crowning glory as the first African-American soloist in a metal band to be signed by a major metal label. By bringing all these ingredients together, Tetrarch confirm that they are a group fully in step with their times. They are still a little green, for sure: but they are full of promise, and they might just have some surprises in store once they have found their feet. © Chief Brody / Qobuz

The follow-up to their 2018 debut Year of the Tiger, The Ides of March is the sophomore album from Washington musician and former Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy. Taking notes from its roots rock predecessor and adding more classic, guitar-charged energy, the project focuses on lyrical themes of unity and perspective. Previewed by the thumping "In Stride," the project was released in May 2021. © David Crone /TiVo
