This Dutch heavy metal quartet was formed in 1979 by Ronald van Prooijen (lead vocals) and Jan Bechtum (guitar). With the addition of bass player Rinus Vreugdenhil and drummer Laurens ‘Bakkie’ Bakker, they modelled themselves on British bands, most noticeably Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Motörhead. They went through numerous line-up changes during their seven-year, seven-album career, but produced consistently high-quality material throughout. Vocalists included Shmoulik Avigal (b. Israel), Pete Lovell (b. England), and Bert Heering (ex-Vandenberg), while Chriz van Jaarsveld, Henri van Maanen and Rob van Enhuizen were responsible for six-string duties at one time or another. The band folded in 1987, but the original quartet played a one-off reunion concert in Sliedrecht the following year. Bechtum revived Picture in the mid-90s with Mark Maas (drums), Jos Adema (bass) and Michel Zandbergen (vocals), but the failure to secure a recording contract led to this line-up’s disbandment in 1999.
