Joshua Radin
A yearning singer/songwriter with a gentle sound steeped in the acoustic folk tradition, Joshua Radin makes dusky anthems in the vein of Elliott Smith and Paul Simon. Radin first gained attention after his 2004 song "Winter" was used on the television comedy Scrubs, paving the way for his 2006 Columbia Records debut, We Were Here. He has issued a handful of Top 50 Billboard 200 albums, including 2008's Simple Times, 2012's Underwater, and 2015's Onward and Sideways.
Born in 1974, Radin was raised in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights. While he grew up listening to his parent's Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and Cat Stevens records, he never intended to be a professional musician. Instead, he studied drawing and painting at Northwestern University, followed by stints as an art teacher, screenwriter, and art gallery employee. Eventually, Radin took a stab at songwriting and played one of his earliest compositions, "Winter," for his friend and fellow Northwestern grad Zach Braff. The actor/director took an immediate liking to the song, and "Winter" eventually found its way onto Braff's hit television show Scrubs in early 2004. After fans began to request more of his music, Radin decided to pursue a songwriting career and signed with Columbia Records, which issued his debut album, We Were Here, in 2006.
Radin relocated to Los Angeles and aligned himself with the Hotel Cafe, a unique Hollywood venue specializing in performances by singer/songwriters. He soon found himself playing national tour dates with a number of Hotel Cafe regulars, including Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles, and Meiko. Meanwhile, he issued a pair of digital EPs while readying the release of his sophomore album, Simple Times, which arrived in late 2008. The album was released in the U.K. two years later. Meanwhile, Radin placated his American fans by issuing a short EP, Songs Under a Streetlight, and putting the finishing touches on The Rock and the Tide, which appeared in October 2010.
In 2012, Radin returned with the album Underwater, featuring musical contributions from such musicians as pianist Benmont Tench (Tom Petty), drummer Jim Keltner (Bob Dylan), and others. Another studio effort, Wax Wings, appeared the following year. Radin then delivered his sixth studio album, 2015's Onward & Sideways, which featured a guest appearance by Sheryl Crow. He returned with The Fall in 2017. His first album produced completely on his own, The Fall included the single "High and Low." The Tony Berg-produced Here, Right Now arrived in 2019 and found Radin offering originals as wells as cover songs by Tom Petty and the Rolling Stones. A seven-track set of covers, Covers, Vol. 1, arrived in 2020, followed but the stand-alone single "Better Life" in the early days of 2021.
