Diary Of Dreams

German group Diary of Dreams' music ranges from darkwave and gothic rock to electro-industrial and future pop. The brainchild of classically trained guitarist and pianist Adrian Hates, who leads an ever-changing cast of collaborators, Diary of Dreams debuted with the brooding, dramatic full-length Cholymelan in 1994. Hates then founded Accession Records, which has issued all of the group's subsequent work. The band's fanbase increased as they began incorporating more electronic rhythms into their music, and a deal with Metropolis earned them a wider audience in the United States. After releasing electro-industrial efforts like Freak Perfume (2002) and dark synth pop albums such as Ego:X (2011), the group issued the acoustic full-length The Anatomy of Silence in 2012. While they've continued mixing heavy guitar riffs and charging electronic beats on releases like Grau im Licht (2015) and Melancholin (2023), 2024's Under a Timeless Spell contains orchestral arrangements of Diary of Dreams' most well-known songs. Düsseldorf native Adrian Hates came from a classical background, and was equally influenced by the electronic pop innovations of the 1980s when he began making his own music. He formed Diary of Dreams (named after one of his early classical guitar compositions, "Tagebuch der Träume") in 1989, and operated the project while simultaneously playing guitar in the gothic/darkwave band the Garden of Delight. The first Diary of Dreams album, Cholymelan, was recorded by Hates and guitarist Alistair Kane, and released in 1994 by Dion Fortune, which also released the Garden of Delight's albums. Hates then founded Accession Records, releasing all of his own band's subsequent music, as well as recordings by other industrial, EBM, and synth pop bands including Haujobb, Information Society, and Assemblage 23. Second Diary of Dreams album End of Flowers appeared in 1996, followed by 1997's Bird Without Wings. The more experimental Psychoma?, featuring guitarist Christian Berghoff and keyboardist/backing vocalist Olaf Schäning, was issued in 1998, while Cholymelan was given an expanded reissue by Accession in 1999. Additionally, Moments of Bloom, featuring updated versions of songs from the band's past albums plus previously unreleased material, became the band's first American release through leading industrial label Metropolis Records. Diary of Dreams incorporated more dance rhythms on clubbier releases like 2000's One of 18 Angels and 2002's Freak Perfume. Dream Collector, a compilation of remixes and rarities initially intended for the South African market after the group toured the country, appeared in 2003. The more conceptual, less danceable Nigredo appeared in 2004, followed by the 2005 EP MenschFeind and concert album Alive. Live DVD Nine in Numbers appeared in 2006. Nekrolog 43, one of the band's most emotionally and musically varied albums, appeared in 2007. Diary of Dreams released ninth studio album (if) in 2009, and shot their first music video for the song "The Wedding." 2011 full-length Ego:X was released in multiple editions with differing track listings. Compilation Dream Collector II and The Anatomy of Silence, consisting of acoustic renditions of the group's catalog highlights, both appeared in 2012. Hates and longtime Diary of Dreams guitarist Gauna released a self-titled album by their industrial prokect .com/kill in 2013. Elegies in Darkness, the eleventh Diary of Dreams album and a return to a heavier sound, appeared in 2014. This was followed by the similarly dark, driving Grau im Licht in 2015, and second concert album reLive in 2016. Hell in Eden appeared in 2017, and Hates formed Coma Alliance with Torben Wendt of labelmate Diorama, releasing their debut Weapon of Choice in 2018. After an unusually lengthy break for the prolific band, Diary of Dreams returned in 2023 with the intricate and dramatic full-length Melancholin. The group's lineup for this effort consisted of Hates, Dejan Nikolic, Felix Wunderer, and Hilger Tintel. Diary of Dreams revisited their back catalog in an acoustic setting for a second time with 2024's Under a Timeless Spell, an orchestral collaboration with die Philharmonie Leipzig.
