Ana de la Vega
Flutist Ana de la Vega has performed with some of Europe's top orchestras. She records for the PentaTone Classics label.
De la Vega was born in the mid-1980s and grew up on a farm in Jerrara, New South Wales, Australia, near Kiama. She discovered the flute at age seven before ever having seen a flute or imagined going to an orchestral concert; she was playing in the farm's garden and heard Jean-Pierre Rampal's recording of Mozart's Concerto in C major for flute, harp, and orchestra, K. 299, on a speaker from the house. She has said that the second movement left her speechless. After studying flute at the University of Sydney, de la Vega headed for France for further work at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris with Raymond Guiot (whom she convinced to give her lessons even though she knew no French at the time) and Catherine Cantin, absorbing the lessons of the venerable French flute school that had produced Rampal. By 23, de la Vega was principal flutist of the Orquestra Sinfonica do Norte in Portugal. She went on to found the London International Players.
Mostly based in Germany, de la Vega has been in demand as a soloist in many countries. She has appeared with such groups as the English Chamber Orchestra, the Bremen Philharmonic, and the Lucerne Festival Strings, and she has been heard at major halls, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Berlin Philharmonie, and Wigmore Hall in London. Signed to the PentaTone Classics label, de la Vega released her debut album, Mozart, Mysliveček: Flute Concertos, in 2018. The album contained the hitherto-unperformed Flute Concerto in D major of Mysliveček and gained positive critical notice. In 2020, de la Vega issued an album of chamber works by Haydn and Carl Stamitz with the Trondheim Soloists, and the following year, she was heard with other players on the album Bach Unbuttoned. During the coronavirus pandemic, de la Vega returned to Kiama with her partner, violinist, and educator Daniel Roehn. With pianist Paul Rivinius, she released the album My Paris in 2022.
