After he made his name singing with Perez Prado's band in Mexico, singer Beny Moré returned home to Cuba and formed his own group. He would go on to cut hundreds of popular sides for RCA until his tragic death in 1963 from cirrhosis of the liver. Adding nicely to the many Moré titles already available from the label, this initial volume of three best-of discs features first generation analog masters, which were discovered by producer Domingo G. Echevarria. And while the sound isn't necessarily light years better than that heard on earlier discs, it's a big enough of an improvement to make this series a prime place for newcomers to start their Moré collection with. The mix includes Moré's standard and beguiling mix of boleros and mambo swingers, with his unbelievably romantic and rich voice especially standing out next to Generoso "El Tojo" Jimenez's top-drawer trombone work. The one complaint here would be about the stingy track selection, though, considering the bargain price, this should not bother listeners too much.
