With Smiling With No Teeth, the Australian Genesis Owusu manages to extricate himself from his rap image and get down to what he is really into: an urban soul sound full of groove, synthetic influences and mischief. This was the recipe for his single WUTD, released in 2019, and which had earned him renown in his country. This dominant tone is therefore not a total surprise, and is also a real success. Whether he is tackling eighties rock aesthetics on Drow or summoning enchanting choirs on Easy, Owusu seems to know how to do everything. There is an offbeat humour to this album, a masterful sense of fun, a lightness. But the light feel is only superficial. He has a knowing way of breaking with conventions. Centrefold's synthesizers and more rap-heavy tracks like Gold Chain help the hotly-anticipated Smiling With No Teeth deliver on its promise. © Brice Miclet / Qobuz
