After an album containing three of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonatas published by Onyx Classics in 2021, Viktoria Mullova is back with a new release. This time she’s accompanied by the remarkable English pianist Alasdair Beatson, an inspired chamber musician. Together, they immerse themselves into early Viennese Romanticism. Here, under another record label, they offer a full recital of Schubert, including the masterpiece Fantasie, D. 934 and Violin Sonata in A major, D.574 (Op. 162). Schubert’s delicate masterpieces for violin and pianoforte have been making a comeback in recent years, with several musicians releasing versions of his works; many of them on early instruments. Naaman Sluchin and Piet Kuijken recorded his complete works for the label Passacaille, though the result was somewhat austere. Lena Neudauer and Wolfgang Brunner beautifully recorded the four sonatas for CPO in a release that’s full of poetic depth and tenderness—it’s really worth a listen. Viktoria Mullova and Alasdair Beatson’s version is arguably less charming, but their natural momentum, obvious concern for compositional balance and the understated beauty of their phrasing is undeniably appealing. This is a rich and sumptuous release. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz
