Here is the perfect album for the summer holidays. The umpteenth album in The Orb’s overabundant discography, No Sounds Are Out of Bounds is the kind of record that appeals to everyone because it offends no one. With it at the beach this summer, you shouldn’t get too many mad looks playing it on the speakers installed on your towel – but your neighbours will still hate you though. A legendary band for ambient fans and users of psychoactive drugs on their way back from a rave, The Orb, who celebrate their thirty-year anniversary in 2018, still deliver a constant flow of chill music. Just in the past decade, Alex Paterson, the brain and only core member of The Orb, dropped around ten releases, including two albums for Cologne flagship label Kompakt (made with seasoned Swiss producer Thomas Fehlmann), an album with David Gilmour of the Pink Floyd (Metallic Spheres in 2010) and three others with Jamaican dub master Lee “Scratch” Perry (The Orbserver in the Star House). With this effort, no sound is off limit: water drops, rooster crow, vocals played on rewind, film extracts mixed with The Orb’s usual trippy sounds, fluffy basses made in Kingston, and padded pianos, like on Doughnuts Forever, the perfect soundtrack to your next nap… Among the collaborators involved, this album features Roger Eno − Brian’s brother − on the production, Jah Wobble, former bassist of Public Image Ltd, and Hollie Cook, daughter of the Sex Pistols’ drummer, for a typically 90s chorus on Rush Hill Road, while the wonderful Pillow Fight @ Shag Mountain will no doubt make a killing for breakfast. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
