The quirky musicians of the Ma'alot Quintet, founded in Germany in 1986, devote their latest recording to Mozart's well-known Quintet in E major for Piano and Winds, K. 452, adding arrangements by their clarinettist Ulf-Guido Schäfer. They have chosen the Overture from Der Schauspieldirektor, K. 486 (The Theatre Director), the Symphony No. 26 in E flat major, K. 184 here arranged as a wind quintet, and, adding a piano to their wind ensemble, a very successful arrangement of the Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major, K. 453 with the pianist Markus Becker as soloist, whose Mozartian touch is supreme.
Purists may think what they like of it, but this was a common practice in the eighteenth century and much earlier, when a work was arranged according to the exigencies and the instrumental availabilities of the moment.
Mozart is in no way slighted by such arrangements, especially since our five musicians offer a truly exciting interpretation here. The overall sound is perfectly homogeneous, the expression is always precisely articulated and the dialogue between the piano and the wind instruments is perfect. The only truly original work on this album. the Quintet for Piano and Winds, benefits, as one would have expected, from an interpretation that is as highly polished as it is expressive. © François Hudry/Qobuz
