This release by soprano Camilla Tilling is one of those with a dual purpose. One is on the surface: the album is a collection of arias about love in its more joyful and its sadder sides. The other is not explicit, but is equally important: the operatic languages of Mozart and Gluck have everything to do with each other, but the two are not so often placed side by side in recital. Tilling is in fine voice, and she executes both halves of this proposition beautifully. The most Gluckian opera in the Mozart canon is Idomeneo, K. 366, and Tilling opens with the overture in a fine, sharp reading by the historical-performance group Musica Saeculorum, followed by a pair of arias. These, and the other arias on the program, are preceded by their recitatives. That's unusual by and large in Classical-era opera recitals, but Tilling is in pursuit of the dramatic sense of each scene she explores, and she makes each one count. From there Tilling moves into Gluck and then into the later Mozart operas, touching on a few roles she might have previously avoided in her youthful, light-soprano guise. It all works wonderfully, and you can sample "Dove sono" for evidence that the singer's voice is as creamy as ever. Note also BIS' strong engineering work from Italy's Grand Hotel Toblach: not a usual venue for the label's team, but you'd never know that. An unusually satisfying operatic recital.

The Teatro Massimo, Palermo's treasure

Qobuz recently travelled to Palermo to meet the Diva Angela Gheorghiu, who was there to sing Adrienne Lecouvreur in the Teatro Massimo. But let's give the theatre its full name: the Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele! Spiritually and geographically, it is at the heart of the Sicilian capital. A contemporary of the Garnier opera house, it is a grandiose monument built in the neoclassical style which flourished in many parts of the world at the end of the 19th Century. It is the biggest opera house in Italy and the third-largest opera house in Europe after Paris (Palais Garnier) and Vienna. We met Francesco Giambrone, sovrintendante del Teatro Massimo…

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.

The rivals: Handel and Porpora in London

After the recent release of the wonderful opera Germanico in Germania by Nicola Porpora, counter-tenor Max-Emanuel Cencic is giving an album recital by way of homage to Nicola Porpora recorded with the Armonia Atenea ensemble under the direction of George Petrou. In this new and atmospheric piece, he evokes the ferocious rivalry which set Porpora against Handel in London...
