Delilah Montagu
Delilah Montagu is a British singer/songwriter who has been hailed for her raw, confessional lyrics. She first broke out on the Black Coffee & David Guetta smash "Drive" before releasing her own debut EP, the intimate In Gold, in 2019. She added strings, steel guitar, and more to the arrangements on her next EP, 2021's This Is Not a Love Song, and her major-label debut album, BABY, released later the same year, further bolstered her sound with elements of brasher pop, rock, and club music, if the sentiments remained distinctly personal. Following a series of collaborations with the likes of King Henry and Max Jury, and after being sampled by Fred again.. on 2022's "Delilah (Pull Me Out of This)," Montagu continued along a path of embracing her softer, atmospheric tendencies on 2023's independently released "Coffee."
Born in Hampshire in South-East England, Montagu was raised by her mother. Discouraged from paying attention to popular culture, she grew up on a diet of classic singer/songwriters like Carole King, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Nina Simone. Spending part of her childhood in the Sussex village of Forest Row, a magnet for creative types, Montagu was often surrounded by musicians and began to write her own, surprisingly mature songs at the age of six, first on piano and then on guitar. Developing her talent over the years, she moved to London at the age of 17 in a bid to break into the music industry. Signed by Sony in 2018, she started working with the label and was in the studio when she was sent a demo and asked if she could record the vocal, without knowing what it was for. Her performance ended up on the Black Coffee & David Guetta track "Drive," which became an international smash hit; Montagu sang the song live at a stadium gig in Johannesburg and reprised the performance for 2020's live-streamed One World Together at Home concert.
Forming a successful partnership with writer/producer Robin Hannibal, Montagu began work on her own material, writing mostly in L.A., where he was based. Her debut EP, In Gold, appeared on Sony in 2019. The follow-up EP, This Is Not a Love Song, arrived in early 2021 featuring more sophisticated arrangements that included sweeping strings. The single "Loud" garnered millions of streams and was remixed by Shura. Issued that July, Montagu's full-length debut, BABY, was even more expansive, adding pulsing and shimmery components of electronic dance music, more assertive rock, and atmospheric pop to her musical toolbox. After its release, Montagu parted ways with Sony.
Next up for the songwriter was a series of collaborations on various labels, including "Fall with Me" with King Henry, "Don't Call Me Baby" with Bamily, and "Is This Love?" with Max Jury, all of them issued in 2022 and favoring her earlier, tenderer side. She had her biggest hit that year with the release of Fred again..'s "Delilah (Pull Me Out of This)," which sampled BABY single "Lost Keys." When Montagu re-emerged with solo material in late 2023, it was with the wispy, semi-acoustic "Coffee" on independent label MNRK.
