Townes in 2009, Guy in 2019 and now Jerry Jeff: Steve Earle has dedicated three albums to Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Jerry Jeff Walker, his late friends and fellow Texans. At the start of the 70s, these four friends and a few other folksingers embodied the Texan branch of the outlaw movement in Austin (a progressive alternative to the country music popular in Nashville). Everyone will know at least one (huge) song by Jerry Jeff Walker, who passed away on the 23rd of October 2020, though they might not necessarily know it was written by him: Mr Bojangles, which was immortalised by Nina Simone in 1971. It comes as no surprise that Steve Earle covers this hit on Jerry Jeff. Of course, he knows many other songs by this artist; this album sees him revisit ten, and there’s nothing sombre or funereal about any of them. With a honky-tonk beat that will make you want to put on bevelled boots and dance on a wooden floor, Steve Earle celebrates the songs written by one of his first idols. Steve Earl has been known to be dark and serious, but here he’s blissful and inspired, serene and joyful—like a man who’s got his nose in one of his all-time favourite books and is enjoying it as much as he did the first time around. His voice purrs like an old cat and his talented musicians are masters of creating timeless, old-school country music. From the very first guitar riff in Gettin’ By to the last bars of the Old Road voice-harmonica solo, this album is like a rare bottle of vintage wine... and each sip is a real treat. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz

The Past, Present and Future of Black Country Artists

For decades, country music has been largely shut off to Black artists. There have been notable, even iconic, exceptions throughout history, of course. But there are too few of those, to the point that their success was often treated as novelty. There were also too many performers who should have made it big but were forced into stereotypes that didn't comfortably fit. Fortunately, there have been signs of hope in the past few years—hope that feels like a lot more than just good intentions and lip service. This tribute explores the history, and promising future, of Black artists in country music.

The Pioneers of Rock’n’Roll

Rock’n’roll isn’t dead. But you can count the pioneers of the genre who are still alive on two fingers: Jerry Lee Lewis and Wanda Jackson. They’re 84 and 82. Lewis was a wild rocker signed with Sun Records who made history by igniting his instrument and transforming church music, country and boogie-woogie into wicked rock'n'roll. Jackson was a country singer who had a brilliant career alongside Elvis. Going from Little Richard to Chuck Berry, not forgetting Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Bo Diddley, Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and Hank Williams, Qobuz pays tribute to the precursors of rock.

Norah Jones in 10 Songs

Even though her albums are released on jazz label Blue Note, Norah Jones’s music has never simply been jazz, just as it has never solely been pop, nor folk, country or soul… Since the early noughties, the American singer and pianist has embraced many styles, often breaking norms in pursuit of her own unique sound, a sound she loves to share through collaborations with different musicians of diverse origin and style. Discover the world of Norah Jones in 10 songs.
