Graces & Voices is a women's vocal ensemble based at the University of Arts in Graz, Austria, with a core of seven singers from Austria, Lithuania, and Belarus. Formed in 2010 by Antanina Kalechyts and Adrija Cepaite, the group specializes in Gregorian chants, though their repertoire also includes later sacred polyphony and even modern choral works. This 2012 release on Rondeau Production consists solely of Gregorian chants from different sources, featuring the famous hymn, Vexilla regis, the mass propers and readings for two feasts of the cross, and the responsories and an antiphon from the offices of those feasts. In essence, these chants form a meditation on the meaning of Christ's crucfixion, and the atmosphere of the whole album is serene and calm, without any disruption of the singers' smooth performances or the sacred ambience. This album will attract devotees of religious music and appeal to those who developed a liking for chant during its revival in the 1990s. Listeners should be aware that this album presents chant in all its purity, and the group has been recorded in a resonant space that adds an ethereal luster to the voices.
