Like Billy Dean before it, Fire in the Dark doesn't stray from the pattern Dean established on Young Man, which might not necessarily be a bad thing. However, there is the problem of diminishing returns -- each time he goes back to the well, he's coming back with a lesser number of first-rate songs. There are highlights on Fire in the Dark, but nothing on the album represents a progress from his first two albums.
