When he first hit the scene in early 2010, Maverick Sabre was a young Englishman ready to dabble in all the genres that defined his country’s recent musical history. Gradually, he’s asserted his own artistic identity by drawing upon years of musical research and honing in on his individual sound. As a result, his 2019 album When I Wake Up is full of steamy soul. His fourth album sees him continue to travel along this refreshing path. Don’t Forget To Look Up features a cocktail of traditional pop elements, modern R&B, and sharp vocal harmonies. Like a true home producer, he composes alone, doubling or tripling his vocals whenever he pleases, as can be heard on the fantastic tracks Get By and Can’t Be Wrong. The track Like This proves the singer’s voice to be perfectly suited to rap, capable of producing more than just a pale imitation of the style. The song Not Easy Love, featuring Demae, also shows that his influences lie as much in mainstream pop as they do in 90s nu-soul. Displaying great emotional range, Maverick Sabre has certainly delivered his most intimate and refined album yet—and perhaps even his most accomplished. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
