Pianists tackle Ferruccio Busoni's monumental Fantasia Contrappuntistica in its definitive edition for solo piano only once in a very great while, so Hamish Milne's 2008 recording of the work for Hyperion has not had much in the way of real competition in the previous 20 or so years; the finest performance of the Fantasia has been of the work in its two-piano form by András Schiff and Peter Serkin. But Milne easily eclipses all but the very finest of earlier performers through raw technical prowess and intellect. He surmounts the work's enormous physical hurdles while shining clear light on its contrapuntal depth and complexity. The result is a performance that speaks more to the Fantasia's expressive intensity than to its difficulty, and there is arguably no better measure of success. Coupled here with Busoni's colossal arrangement of Liszt's Fantasy and Fugue on the Chorale 'Ad nos, ad salutarem undam' and his probing arrangement of the Andantino from Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9, Milne's disc will be mandatory listening for those who adore Busoni's imposing masterpiece, particularly in Hyperion's clear, smooth, and evocative digital sound.
