Continuing its series of releases covering the history of music in comic-book form, the Parisian publisher BDMUSIC has brought out one of the first albums in its "classic" collection in 2009 dedicated to Erik Satie, embellished with joyful, colourful illustrations by José Correa. Reissued in print in 2016, this digital edition contains text, drawings and music.
This collection aims to present the greatest performances of this composer's best-known works, and, as far as possible, present them in their entirety. This album includes the Gymnopédies and the Gnossiennes in the touchstone version recorded by Aldo Ciccolini, as well as a selection of rarer works played by Francis Poulenc who was one of Satie's greatest admirers.
This musical selection also includes two versions of the ballet Parade, which provoked much commentary, most notably from Jean Cocteau, when it was first performed in 1917 during the Great War. In addition to the original orchestral version conducted by Igor Markevitch, the author's transcription for four-handed piano is played here by two members of the Group of Six: Georges Auric and Francis Poulenc.
One of the charms of this release is the way it thinks outside the box, with the full version of the astonishing Socrate directed by René Leibowitz, as well as the sadly-overlooked Messe des pauvres. The bonus offered at the end of the tracklist is a real treat, with the Trois Morceaux en forme de poire and the faux-naive melody Daphénéo, recorded in 1954 by Juliette Gréco, accompanied by the young Michel Legrand and his orchestra. These carefully-restored reissues provide an almost-exhaustive panorama of the work of this most curious musician. © F. Buchaillot / Qobuz
