This release marks the recording debut of Drew Peterson, a fast-rising American pianist still in the program at the Juilliard School. His all-American program, which he has performed live in whole or in part many times, is suited to the mission of the Steinway & Sons label, which has done well to sign him to its roster. The music on the program ranges from late Romantic (Griffes, and Judith Lang Zaimont, surely the only composer on the classical scene to have also appeared on the Lawrence Welk Show) to progressive (a movement of the Ives Piano Sonata No. 2, the "Concord" sonata, and the early Piano Sonata of Elliott Carter, which receives a persuasive and committed reading here) to the unclassifiable Piano Sonata in E flat minor of Samuel Barber, in which that conservative composer fascinatingly put himself through the paces of the new systems of the 20th century. Sample the opening Allegro energico of that work, both to experience Peterson's mastery of the sonata's considerable technical demands, and to hear how he captures the thread that connects all these American works, progressive or conservative: there is a big, stark Beethovenian quality to them, even to the slender pictorial pieces of Zaimont, an awareness of being in a country that only marginally cared what the composers were doing. Steinway engineers contribute suitably monumental sound from New York's Steinway Hall, and the entire package can be strongly recommended.
