Experts in uppercuts to the jaw and knees to the […], Metz aren’t the kind to give out free hugs. Automat sees the Toronto punk trio refine their formula for focused, violent rock’n’roll – the same brand of unrelenting, binary hardcore music as Nirvana (Territorial Pissings), Shellac and Jesus during the 90s. However, this new round (the 4th so far) isn’t a studio album. It’s a B-sides compilation, of demos, oddities and even pre-Sub Pop recordings. Leaning on that impeccable, brutal and ferocious wall of sound, Alex Edkins, Hayden Menzies and Chris Slorach cooked up something delicious. Our ears hurt, but we can’t stop listening! © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Pavement's Not-So-Secret Genre-Making History

Thirty years ago, Pavement set a road map for '90s indie rock—lo-fi, whip-smart, Gen-X cynical—with their career-defining Slanted and Enchanted. (And yes, the band came to define the term "slacker rock.") You can still hear their influence on artists like Courtney Barnett, Deerhunter, Beabadoobee, Parquet Courts, Kiwi Jr., and many more. And, of course, they famously, majorly inspired Blur's 1997 self-titled album, in effect changing the face of Brit-pop without even meaning to. As Pavement continues on their first tour since 2010, here's a look back at the band's history through their epochal records.

Female Jazz Singers: 10 New Names to Know

When it comes to jazz singers, Billie, Ella, Sarah, and Nina may be firm favourites, but this vocal style is sprinkled with an array of exceptional singers ready to make their mark on this legendary genre. Can we still call it jazz? Or is it just that jazz as we know it is changing? Either way, it doesn’t make these vocalists any less incredible. So, without further ado, here are ten women who are making an impact on the world of jazz.

My Bloody Valentine, the Inner Experience

Thirty years after its release, My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" remains the craziest album of the 90s. This electric monument in the form of a wall of sound was a product of Kevin Shields' deranged mind. It turned the history of rock upside down and remains a major source of inspiration for many musicians from all walks of life.
