This Chicago band combines 21st century "post-metal" soundscape techniques with classic riffage and guitar solos to create something that's both new and weathered at once, and pretty damn enjoyable. Their blend of organic doom and psychedelia is supported by keyboards and atmospheric sounds reminiscent of Neurosis, Isis, and even Deftones, but the riffs on tracks like "Our Sun, Our Saviour" are pure Black Sabbath/Saint Vitus crunch. Many tracks blend together; the title track is seamlessly joined to "Grey Wolves," which leads inexorably into "Our Sun, Our Saviour." The band's influences are occasionally pretty obvious. The grandiose riffing, hoarse roars, and crooned backing vocals of "Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence" all but require the mailing of a royalty check to Aaron Turner of Isis. But the Atlas Moth always add something that's uniquely theirs to each song, in this case a high-pitched black metal screech and some seriously stoneriffic guitar. This is an impressive full-length debut by a promising American metal band.
