Desde su debut en la adolescencia con su banda familiar The Staples Singers, su voz siempre ha producido una profunda emoción en sus oyentes. Se la puede escuchar en las canciones que marcaron el movimiento por los derechos civiles de la década de 1960 (¡la favorita de Martin Luther King!), como “Long Walk to D.C.” y “When Will We Be Paid”. También la encontramos en sus grandes éxitos, como “Let’s Do It Again” y la impecable “I’ll Take You There”. El trabajo en solitario de Mavis Staples ha pasado desapercibido durante demasiado tiempo, pero canciones como “Crying in the Chapel” se han convertido en eternas. Ha sido invitada por una larga lista de artistas para colaboraciones de prestigio: desde Prince (“Melody Cool”) hasta su viejo amigo Bob Dylan (“Gonna Change My Way of Thinking”), pasando por Run the Jewels, Norah Jones, Arcade Fire, Los Lobos y Gorillaz, sin olvidar a Ben Harper y Mr. Ward. Pero ninguna relación ha resultado ser más fructífera que la existente con Jeff Tweedy de Wilco, que ha escrito canciones para ella y ha producido los álbumes “If All I Was Was Black” y “You Are Not Alone".
