Cuatro millones. Es el número de ejemplares que vendió Garbage de su primer álbum. Y enseguida el cuarteto estaba grabando el siempre «difícil» segundo disco. Claro que en este caso no sería tan complicado, puesto que los miembros del grupo tenían ya sólidas carreras a sus espaldas. Tres de ellos, nativos de Wisconsin, eran productores: Butch Vigh (Nevermind de Nirvana), Duke Erikson y Steve Marker. Y ellos hicieron venir de su Escocia natal a Shirley Manson, tras ver un clip de Angelfish –su antigua banda– a las 2 de la madrugada en la MTV. La discografía de Shirley, por otra parte, contaba nada menos que con ocho referencias. Sea como fuere, este segundo LP de Garbage resulta incluso más consistente, y es además el preferido por sus autores. Frente a la inmediatez de Garbage, Version 2.0 propone una poesía polisémica, una mixtura de emociones no poco profundas que se despliegan sucesivamente. A la vez, encierra diferentes niveles de lectura y una estética visual elaborada junto al videasta Andrea Giacobi que actúa a manera de persistencia retiniana. Y si Push It supone el nexo entre ambos álbumes, el resto del disco apunta hacia otros horizontes. La banda juega aquí a contrastar melodía y ritmo, distorsión electro (Dumb, Hammering in My Head) y armonías pop (When I Grow Up, I Think I’m Paranoid, que citan a los Beach Boys), baladas (Medication, You Look So Fine) y riffs nerviosos, con su habitual atracción por lo extraño, a lo que debe añadirse una producción impecable y una búsqueda de la canción pop perfecta desde formulaciones novedosas. Entre guitarras post-grunge, experimentaciones noise, una voz dislocada y el extraordinario carisma de Shirley Manson, Garbage consigue perfeccionar su genoma. Un ADN tímbrico que encajará muy bien con las sonoridades destroy-futuristas de ese año 1998 pero que, dos décadas después, parece quizá demasiado anclado en su época © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
