Pat Metheny convocó a un seleccionado de estrellas para su álbum Unity Band: el baterista Antonio Sánchez ha tocado con él desde hace una década, mientras que el contrabajista Ben Williams lo hace aquí por vez primera, al igual que el saxofonista tenor Chris Potter (quien también demuestra en este disco su habilidad con el clarinete bajo y el soprano). Metheny explota al máximo las posibilidades del conjunto. Metheny y Potter deslumbran con su inventiva lírica y sus solos casi de bop, intrincados e imaginativos. Sin embargo, lo que más asombra durante todo el disco es la sección rítmica; en efecto, es su interacción intuitiva e informativa la que va indicando nuevos recodos para que Metheny y Potter exploren. Teniendo en cuenta el carácter composicional de los experimentos solistas del guitarrista de los últimos años, Unity Band significa un retorno a lo que se le da mejor: componer para, y tocar con, una banda de instrumentistas de primer nivel.
