A diferencia del debut Oh Wonder del 2015, compuesto por una selección de sencillos editados por el dúo británico a lo largo de un año, Ultralife fue concebido desde el principio como un álbum. El grupo se mantiene fiel a su estética minimalista e independiente, rehusándose a utilizar un estudio profesional y produciendo y mezclando el disco por cuenta propia, aunque esta vez emplea una instrumentación más diversa y recurre incluso a músicos invitados. Como bien demuestra el impetuoso sencillo del mismo nombre, Ultralife termina siendo un trabajo bastante más luminoso y expansivo que los precedentes esfuerzos del dúo.
