Third no es un álbum que se pueda degustar en bocados de 30 segundos o que se pueda escuchar sin un orden determinado. Requiere atención y un esfuerzo por parte del oyente, desafiando cualquier tipo de convención sobre qué constituye el arte del pop por parte de uno de sus principales inquilinos: ofrece música que es genuina y asombrosamente original. Lo que diferencia a Portishead es que hacen música humana. Eso no se debe exclusivamente a la evocadora voz de Beth Gibbons, que puede ofrecer una vía de entrada a esta melancolía pero no su único atisbo de soul, mientras que el perfeccionismo de Barrow y Utley dan como resultado un álbum donde nada suena enlatado, lo contrario a cualquier disco moderno donde cada sonido está tan retocado que suena poco natural.
