Despite the evocative name that symbolises hope and new beginnings, this phoenix will not be rising from its ashes. However, the metaphor embodied by this mythical bird is far more powerful and poetic than the typical post-humous album title. The members of Grey Daze are well aware of this. The late Chester Bennington began his music career with Grey Daze before leaving to join Linkin Park in 1998. Grey Daze had already made a name for itself with Amends, an album which used Chester Bennington’s vocals from the 1990s layered over newly recorded instruments. The band have since decided to keep their former band member alive with the release of The Phoenix, which picks up where Amends left off.

Digging through Chester’s repertoire and the tapes he lent his voice to, Grey Daze strengthen their statement. The vocals give the album a melodic post-grunge sound that’s combined with strong instrumentation that leans towards the neo-metal of the 90s which influenced bands like Linkin Park (a great example of this sound is the opening track and single Saturation (Strange Love)). This release definitely has a more raw, electric sound, something that’s easy to hear on the track Starting to Fly. The album goes on to spread its wings and calls upon various guests, including Dave Navarro, Richard Patrick and even Chester’s daughters, Lily and Lila Bennington (Hole).

Although The Phoenix is more dynamic and less sentimental than the previous album, it still packs a good punch of nostalgia for two reasons: firstly, by opting for a sound that’s reminiscent of a time-gone-by; secondly, by reincarnating a voice that succeeded in making metal more accessible than ever. This album is a tribute to a true legend and feels like one final parting gift to his fans. Grey Daze have paid homage to their former band member across two fantastic albums which are both articulate and heart-breaking.
