Mary J. Blige reclutó una multitud de productores invitados para que participaran en temas de The Breakthrough y el resultado es uno de sus álbumes más potentes y variados. Como es habitual, el sonido es una mezcla de ritmos suaves, contemporáneos urbanos y hip-hop, pero Blige lo borda con temas como el vibrante "Enough Cryin" (con su voz sonora y variada) y el despreocupado "Can't Hide from Luv" con el artista invitado Jay-Z. Y tanto si se pone romántica ("Can't Get Enough") como si detalla las penalidades del corazón ("Baggage"), Blige interpreta unas líneas de R&B inigualablemente elásticas. Incluso un dúo aparentemente improbable con Bono y U2 en "One" tiene un resultado precioso, y añade una nueva dimensión a esa melodía familiar.
