Si bien el corte de difusión samplea ostentosamente un hito de los '80, The Beginning no es un acto de nostalgia. Exceptuando algún sampler de Slick Rick o Chic, o alguna referencia a Mr. Roboto (además de las toneladas de ampulosos sintetizadores que dominan esta producción), nada más evoca directamente los '80. De la misma forma que los dos últimos discos de los Peas, está mayormente compuesto por himnos de discoteca y el consueto rapeo de will.i.am, junto con armonías de Auto-Tune y olas de sintetizadores. La sombra del "I Gotta Feeling" del 2009 planea largamente sobre este disco de temas para no que pare la fiesta, a partir del machacante primer sencillo "The Time (Dirty Bit)", construído a partir de "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" de Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes. Otros momentos destacados son "The Best One Yet (The Boy)" y "Don't Stop The Party".
