Conductor Paavo Järvi, newly having ascended to the podium of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, launches a new Tchaikovsky symphony cycle with this release, pairing the Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64, with the tone poem Francesca da Rimini, Op. 32. The competition is heavy in this field, including releases by Järvi himself, but he has refined his earlier readings, and more importantly, he offers something new, namely performances that fall somewhere in between heated Russian approaches (think Gergiev with the Vienna Philharmonic) and modernist readings that tone down the Fifth Symphony and even Francesca da Rimini. The performances are pure Järvi, with moderate tempos that allow the introduction of a wealth of instrumental detail. These build up to climaxes that carry plenty of Tchaikovskian emotion but avoid the overwrought quality that, per the composer's own testimony, attended the Fifth Symphony's creation. Listeners expecting blazing nobility from the big tunes in the outer movements of the symphony or a foot-tapping Francesca da Rimini finale won't get them here, but they will notice numerous small things in both works. From early indications, the chemistry between Järvi and his Zurichers is strong, and he gets excellent engineering support from the Alpha label, working in the city's Maag Halle. One awaits with pleasure future releases in the cycle.
