El arte de Jeff Parker siempre ha ido más allá de los límites de la música de Tortoise, de la que sigue siendo EL guitarrista mítico. Desde el post-rock hasta el jazz, este músico de Chicago que ha tocado con Joshua Redman, Brian Blade, Meshell Ndegeocello o Makaya McCraven, entre muchos otros, nunca ha dejado de avanzar. “Me atrajo el jazz ya cuando era niño. Fue el primer género musical que realmente resonó en mí cuando me interesé seriamente por la música. Cuando tenía 9 o 10 años, me gustó porque podías encontrar cosas inesperadas en él. Fue el jazz el que me llevó a la improvisación, el que me llevó a la experimentación en un sentido más amplio.”
Con Suite for Max Brown, Jeff Parker ofrece una secuela de su álbum The New Breed de 2016. Un homenaje a su madre Maxine Brown (que tiene 19 años en la portada del álbum) con nueve composiciones originales, así como una relectura de Black Narcissus de Joe Henderson (llamado Gnarciss) y After the Rain de John Coltrane. Rodeado por el pianista y saxofonista Josh Johnson, el bajista Paul Bryan, el trompetista piccolo Rob Mazurek, el trompetista Nate Walcott, los bateristas Jamire Williams, Makaya McCraven y Jay Bellerose, la violonchelista Katinka Kleijn e incluso su hija de 17 años Ruby Parker (que presta su voz para el tema de apertura Build a Nest), Parker ha construido la base de su proyecto a partir de ritmos y muestras, componiendo con guitarra, teclados, bajo, percusión y grabando esporádicamente su voz antes de invitar a sus amigos músicos a tocar e improvisar sobre sus melodías. El resultado, más híbrido que nunca, es un mosaico de jazz filtrado una y otra vez.
