The Strauss in St. Petersburg title of the thoroughly enjoyable release from the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra under Neeme Järvi indicates not a single stretch of time, but a repeat engagement: Johann Strauss II, handsomely paid and sometimes accompanied by relatives, appeared at a pavilion at a Russian railroad terminus in the city of Pavlovsk. The venue was called Vauxhall and modeled on London's Vauxhall garden, and it even lent its name to the subsequent Russian word for a railroad station, Vauxhall. The music on this album was played at these concerts; some of it was newly composed for the occasion, and some of it consists of big Strauss hits like the Pizzicato Polka and Wein, Weib und Gesang. The Russian pieces, even where indicated by a specific title, are only lightly Russian in flavor, but you can hear it in the minor half steps of the Russische Marsch-Fantasie, Op. 353. This is not a commonly heard piece, and overall the concept here produces an interesting cross-section of the Waltz King's music with such novelties as a Bauern-Polka, Op. 276, which includes a male chorus. There's also a song by a young Russian composer, Olga Smirnitskaya, with whom Strauss became infatuated. Probably the main attraction is the work of Järvi, who is 180-degrees apart from the delicate Strauss recordings that are the fashion: he is lusty, funny, and vigorous. All this, of course, fits with the scene in Russia where this music was presented: Järvi's interpretations would have cut through the murmur of the crowd. An unusually satisfying Strauss release.
