A pesar de haber editado dos discos de elegante pop orquestal, el cantautor y guitarrista Richard Hawley nunca pudo sacarse el rock & roll de encima. Tal vez a causa de su participación en la reunión de Pulp, o a su reciente colaboración con los Arctic Monkeys, Hawley -que se mudó de Mute a Parlophone- decidió volver a las fuentes en Standing At The Sky's Edge. El álbum presenta nueve cortes impulsado por dos guitarras muy agresivas, bajo, batería, y efectos de sonido "rocket sounds", y fue casi íntegramente grabado en vivo en el estudio. Si bien su talento para componer canciones atractivas y exquisitas melodías permanece intacto, esta vez son los riffs los que predominan.
