Tras una largo proceso de gestación, el decimotercer álbum de U2 apareció improvisamente en septiembre de 2014. Fruto de interminables sesiones junto al productor Danger Mouse, Songs of Innocence es el disco de U2 que más coquetea con la electrónica desde Pop, aunque sin alterar demasiado la misma fórmula que la banda viene empleando desde el 2000. En efecto, los U2 ya no miran al futuro como hicieran en los noventa sino a su propio pasado, algo que el autobiográfico tema de apertura "The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)" declara abiertamente. El grupo trata de abarcar todos sus períodos, camuflando su nostalgia con sonidos modernos o intentando extender sus horizontes sin abandonar su hogar, pero este afán por complacer a todos termina resultando en un disco exclusivamente para seguidores acérrimos.
