Eighty-six is a more than reasonable age for a wise old man to make an album like this. This is Abdullah Ibrahim's state of mind throughout Solotude, whose title could not be more meaningful. A solo/solitude which, above all, allows us to remember the elegance of the discreet yet fundamental South African pianist. In 1963, when Duke Ellington heard his unique style for the first time, he said: "You are blessed because you come from the source.” This source (Africa) has taken the man who then called himself Dollar Brand, down various paths. Abdullah Ibrahim's playing quickly became distinctive, with some Monk influence and, under the surface, Ellingtonian tradition on some of his compositions. Semantics steeped in his own spirituality, but above all in a deep melancholy that resonates throughout the twenty pieces of Solotude. These themes which are often brief, and which follow one another with impressive fluidity, have the curves of a stripped-down haiku. Not many notes, just the essentials. A lot of space, large spaces even, and a permanent elegance that makes the album wonderful from start to finish. As Nelson Mandela said when he invited the pianist to play at his presidential inauguration: "Bach? Beethoven? We have much better!” © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
