Tonight’s The Night forma parte de la historia negra del rock & roll. Y es que en un periodo de seis meses Neil Young perdió a dos amigos a causa de sendas sobredosis: a su guitarrista Danny Whitten y a su roadie Bruce Berry. Por eso no es extraño que este álbum, grabado en directo en agosto y septiembre de 1973 (pero lanzado en junio de 1975, después de On The Beach), despida destellos tan oscuros… El viaje introspectivo de Tonight’s The Night se nutre, pues, de esos dramas personales, pero también del clima opresivo que reinaba en Estados Unidos por entonces: creciente violencia urbana, aumento del consumo de drogas, la guerra de Vietnam y el colapso de la utopía hippie. Un cargada constelación temática que se plasmará en un sombrío pero excelente disco, realmente desgarrador. Incluso la instrumentación de Tonight’s The Night se revela frágil, con ese piano titubeante y un steel pedal de sonoridades esenciales. Y ese despojamiento sirve para subrayar la belleza tanto de las melodías como de algunas devastadoras baladas, entre otras Tired Eyes, New Mama y Borrowed Tune…
Los días 20, 21 y 22 de septiembre de 1973 Neil Young y su banda, The Santa Monica Flyers (o lo que es lo mismo, Ben Keith al steel pedal, Nils Lofgren a la guitarra y al piano, Billy Talbot al bajo y Ralph Molina a la batería), subían al escenario del Roxy, por entonces un recientemente inaugurado club de Los Ángeles en West Hollywood, para presentar este nuevo repertorio cincelado por el dolor y por la evocación de la muerte. No obstante, las interpretaciones que ofrecen al público californiano están cagadas de emotividad, de calor y a veces, también, de un entusiasmo sincero y comunicativo, lógicamente ausente en las versions en estudio. Ahí reside la magia de este documento que se acaba de rescatar y restaurar. Seguramente los fans de Neil Young escucharán en bucle Roxy - Tonight’s The Night Live, aunque los neófitos pueden igualmente aprovechar tan inmejorable ocasión para descubrir y disfrutar del universo de un músico incomparable, que en aquel momento atravesaba por uno de sus momentos personales más difíciles, pero extraordinarios desde el punto de vista artístico. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
