La leyenda cuenta que Verónica Castro, la famosa actriz mexicana, invitó a Luis Miguel, el niño prodigio de la balada y auténtico ídolo juvenil del momento, a un programa de televisión que ella presentaba en CDMX en 1989, y que en algún momento del show le presentó a Armando Manzanero. “¿Podrían cantar juntos?”, preguntó Verónica. “Me siento halagado”, respondió Manzanero. “Es mi sueño, pero no estoy preparado”, interpeló Luis Miguel. Y lo que surgió allí fue magia, y Hugo López, manager del cantante, vio la luz y pensó que el bolero era el camino a seguir por su joven representado.
Romance rompió las barreras de edad, porque una nueva generación empezó a cantar temas que sus padres sabían de memoria y con los cuales se habían enamorado. Rompió también los esquemas de su casa discográfica, empeñada hasta ese momento en seguir adelante con un producto juvenil pop. Y rompió las barreras del éxito al alcanzar sucesivamente dos Top de las listas Billboard y vender más de 13 millones de copias en todo el mundo. Luis Miguel no volvió a ser el mismo a partir de ese momento y la música romántica latina tampoco.
El álbum, que incluye doce canciones clásicas del repertorio romántico latinoamericano, fue gestado en el Ocean Way Recording de Los Ángeles en el verano de 1991, saliendo al mercado en diciembre de ese año. Los artífices del proyecto musical fueron el propio Manzanero, asesor musical y coproductor, y Bebu Silvetti, arreglista. Los dos singles promocionales fueron Inolvidable, de Julio Gutiérrez, que había inmortalizado Tito Rodríguez en los años 60, y No sé tú, que Manzanero compuso especialmente para el disco. Casi enseguida ocuparon los primeros puestos del Hit Parade latino en Estados Unidos, y revolucionaron el mercado en Suramérica.
Los discos de oro se sucedieron también en países no hispanohablantes como Brasil y Taiwán, y Luis Miguel, apodado “El Sol de México”, grabaría tres álbumes más de boleros, incluyendo algún que otro tema folclórico: Segundo Romance, Romances, Mis Romances. Su éxito fue vital para que las nuevas generaciones reconocieran el talento de compositores como César Portillo de la Luz o Roberto Cantoral, y también para que otros cantantes provenientes de otros géneros, como Linda Ronstadt o Sergio Vargas, grabasen boleros.
