Since the Original Broadway Cast album of The King and I fell out of copyright in Europe in 2002 (it is still claimed for copyright in the U.S.), several British labels have remastered old records and put out their own unlicensed CDs of the music. Naxos has taken a more scholarly and thorough approach, including good liner notes and discographical information, plus interesting bonus tracks to augment the 12 tracks of the original LP released by Decca Records in 1951. Those include five excerpts from a studio cast album actually recorded prior to the Original Broadway Cast album and released by RCA Victor; four from the Original London Cast album of 1954 on British Philips; and the instrumental "March of the Siamese Children" as performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by composer Richard Rodgers himself from the Columbia album Rodgers Conducts Rodgers . Welcome as these additions are, the choices from what was available are questionable. The RCA Victor album boasted pop singer Dinah Shore in the leading female role of Anna Leonowens, but she is underutilized in the tracks selected, appearing only in the duet "Shall We Dance" along with Robert Merrill as the king. Since Gertrude Lawrence, who portrayed Anna Leonowens on Broadway, was not a great singer, it would have been nice to be able to contrast Shore's versions of "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Hello, Young Lovers," or "Getting to Know You." The decision to include Merrill's reading of "A Puzzlement" is justified by the inclusion of extra lyrics that were trimmed from the recording on the Original Broadway Cast album. But the real puzzlement is why Herbert Lom's version of the same song from the Original London Cast album was used, especially since Lom is doing nothing more than copying Yul Brynner from the Original Broadway Cast, and this makes for three appearances by this minor song on the disc. Similarly, Valerie Hobson of the Original London Cast seems to be channeling Lawrence in her performances of "Getting to Know You" and another minor song, "Shall I Tell You What I Think of You?" These could have been dispensed with in favor of using more of Shore, to better effect.
